Akuroku: Misfortune pt3

“Hey do you guys know where Roxas is?” Axel asked as he sat down at their lunch table.
“Um. . .he couldn’t make it today.” Riku lied as Sora looked down to the ground, wanting to burst out crying but knowing that he couldn’t say anything.
“Oh. . .” Axel said as he started to scan around the lunch room.
“Where is he then?” Axel asked with a hint of curiousity.
“He’s gone to his Grandparents house for a visit. I don’t know when he’s coming back.” Riku told Axel knowing that only the second sentence was the truth.
Sora didn’t feel hungry and placed his sandwich down on the table, just staring at it as if he was longing for it. Axel eyed him suspiciously.
“Sora can I have that if you’re not going to eat it?”
Sora shook his head and pushed his lunch over to Axel. Axel gladly accepted it and smiled at Sora. “Thanks.”
Sora leaned on Riku and let out a deep breath. Riku knew exactly what was going through his mind. Riku grabbed Sora’s hand under the table and gave it a slight squeeze.
“Hey what’s wrong with you guys?” Axel asked looking at them suspiciously.
“It’s nothing.” Riku told Axel.
Sora slowly let go of Riku’s hand and got up from his seat leaving the area. Riku watched as Sora walked down the hall and knew that Sora just needed some distance.
Sora had blamed himself for the whole incident. If he would have persuaded Roxas to live with him then nothing would have gone wrong. Roxas would have never been beaten, but Sora knew better than anyone that Roxas stays in that horrible family because of his sister. If Roxas ever reported the incident to the child services they would be separated and Namine would be sent off to some random persons’ house while he would live in Sora’s house. Roxas wouldn’t ever let that happen.

Axel tapped his pencil a radically, he stared at Roxas’ chair that was now empty and lifeless. He missed Roxas, but worried, what if yesterday was just an act? What if Roxas really just told him lies to make sure he didn’t hurt his feelings and then left town to run away from all the lies.
Axel shook his head and tried to focus on the board, he had to distract himself someway and maybe school would be useful for once.

“Sora the visiting hours are up.” Riku told Sora as he walked into the room.
Sora was standing next to a bed, hovering over Roxas who was still unconscious. Roxas had to receive at least 3 extra packs of blood to restore his normal blood flow. Roxas was beaten up pretty bad and his bruises we’re treated but most of them would be left as scars.  
It was pretty easy to lie to the doctors and say that Roxas was of age and he was living by himself when a burglar came in and tried to steal Roxas’ items but Roxas fought back. The doctors didn’t ask any more questions after Sora burst out crying for the tenth time that day and left them with barely any answers to what exactly happened to Roxas.

Sora sighed as he grabbed Roxas’ hand and squeezed it slightly. Roxas showed no sign of waking up any time soon and Sora was scared and terrified that Roxas would never wake up. Riku always reassured him that Roxas was tough and wouldn’t let this take his life. But Sora would always have that ounce of doubt in the back of his head.
“Excuse me but you have to leave now, come back tomorrow if you can.” The nurse said as she walked up to Riku’s side.
“Sora, we have to go.” Riku told him.
Sora shook his head and before leaving he gave Roxas’ hand one last squeeze. Riku grabbed his hand as Sora walked out. Sora smiled a weak smile at Riku showing appreciation.
“He’ll come around.” Riku told Sora as they walked out of the hospital.
“Yea. . .”


A week passed by and Roxas still didn’t wake up. He was lifeless on that bed, he laid there taking in deep breaths and receiving food from a tube. He seemed to be getting worse, one of his injuries got an infection and the doctors are trying to help stop the infection but nothing seems to be working. Sora kept repeating what Riku told him, that everything would be okay, but it wasn’t. Not at all.

“Okay that’s it! Roxas has been gone for about a week and you both barely ever speak anymore!” Axel almost yelled for the entire cafeteria to hear.
“Tell me what the hell is going on! Where is Roxas?! Why aren’t you talking!?” Axel was seething with anger and resented Sora and Riku for telling him nothing.
“Axel please calm down.” Riku said in a calm voice.
Axel grunted and sat down across from them and waited for a reply.
“Roxas is still out with his grandmother and-“
“Riku.” Sora interrupted Riku’s lie.
“We should tell him the truth.” Sora said in almost a whisper.
“What truth!?” Axel leaned in closer and was yearning for an answer.
“Roxas. . .got into. . .an accident.”
Axel froze up and any trace of anger that was on his face was now replaced with fear.
“What do you mean accident!?”
Sora took in a deep breath and decided to start from the beginning.
“Roxas. . .he is adopted.”
“Yes I know.”
“Well his adoptive parents are not the best, they like to. . .beat Roxas.”
“What do you mean!?” Axel looked like he was about to throw up.
“Roxas’ parents are smokers and alcoholics’. . .the only reason Roxas puts up with it is for his little adoptive sister.”Sora broke out into tears and tried to stop but he just couldn’t help it.
Riku grabbed Sora’s hand and comforted Sora.
“Roxas was beaten to a pulp on the last day you saw him.” Riku finished for Sora.
“WHAT!?” Axel stood up and had a slight spark of fire in his eyes.
“Where is Roxas!?” Axel demanded.
“The hospital on the corner of Mapple.”
Axel bolted out of the school and down the street, running as fast as he could to reach the hospital.
He made it to the hospital in top time and ran to the main desk. “Which room is Roxas in?”
“Roxas. . .oh down the hall to your right the last room down.” The polite nurse told him with a smile.
“Thank you.”
Axel walked down the hallway and took each step like they were his last. He was scared, but knew he had to see Roxas. Axel stopped for a moment before reaching for the doorknob that supposedly led to Roxas. Axel grabbed the doorknob and before he knew what was happening Sora and Riku were next to him.
“Axel, Roxas hasn’t woken up yet.” Axel felt a pull at his heart.
“He’s been sleeping ever since the incident. Axel he doesn’t look good.” Sora spoke in a soft voice as he stood behind Riku.
Axel didn’t care though if Roxas looked like something just chewed on his body, he just wanted to see Roxas.
Axel turned the doorknob and slowly walked into the room that shone purely white on the walls and floors. Axel found a curtain to be surrounding something. Axel walked up to the curtain and reached out for it. Axel hesitated for a moment and felt the eyes of Sora and Riku upon him.
For a moment though Axel forgot completely about the world around him. It was just himself and Roxas who was hidden behind this sheet. Axel took a deep breath and got his head ready for what he was about to view. Axel pulled the curtain to the side and gasped at the sight.
